Fire Safety in Witchcraft

Fire is a very commonly used element in the world of witches. Why is that? Because fire is powerful! It represents transformation, purification, protection, energy and action.


Because we use fire so often, it’s extremely important that we use safe fire practices during our spell casting and rituals.


Today we are going to cover the basics of fire safety in witchcraft, including more specific precautions to take during rituals.


  1. NEVER leave flames unattended - not even for a moment. If necessary, snuff out your candle with the intention of restarting it when time allows.

  2. Have a fire extinguisher or baking soda readily available when using fire.

  3. Clear the area. Keep flammable items like fabric, paper and clutter away from flames.

  4. Use sturdy, heat-resistant candle holders. Ensure that they are stable and won’t tip over. Placing the candle holder on a fire safe plate can help two-fold. First, it offers stability and second, it creates more distance between the flame and any altar cloth you may be using.

  5. Trim your candle wick to about 1/4” to prevent large flames and to reduce sparks.

  6. Allow the candle to burn all the way down, or snuff it out when done. Blowing out candles could cause the hot wax and sparks to scatter. A simple metal spoon can be used if you don’t have a snuffer.

  7. Always ensure that there is at least four feet of clearance above the candle to prevent anything from igniting.

  8. Use heat-resistant tools like a cauldron and incense burners.

  9. Avoid loose, flowing or synthetic clothing that can easily catch fire.

  10. Keep children and pets at a safe distance.
