Protection Magick

Today we’re going to talk about the most important type of magick, at least in my opinion. That is protection magick. Protection magick is extremely important because it safeguards our spiritual, emotional and physical well being. It creates energetic shields against negative forces. These negative forces es could be anything from a bad attitude to psychic attacks. Ensuring personal safety brings mental clarity and a secure environment.

There are many magickal ways to protect oneself. Here are just a few. Energy Shielding - this creates a personal aura or shield against negativity, psychic attacks, curses and draining energies. Wards - defined as: the action or process of guarding. Magickal wards are a type of protection used to guard against negative energies, entities or even physical harm. Used to protect an individual or a place, these can be used for such things as your home, car or business. Amulets - protect by warding off harm and negative energy. Often using a natural object or symbol of defense.

Before doing any spell work, it’s always important to start with energetic cleansing. Energetic cleansing is used to clear away any negative energy in your space. You can use smoke cleansing, music, noise (such as a bell or hand clapping). Always have a window cracked or door open to allow the negativity to escape.

Energy Shielding: The method I use requires only your mind. Sit in a quiet, peaceful space. You will use a breathing technique - breathe in for four seconds, hold four seconds, breathe out for four seconds. Close your eyes and take your first breath. Imagine a bright ball of light above your head. This light is always with you, this is Source. As you breathe out, imagine the light growing and wrapping around your head, guiding you to make the proper decisions with logic and intuition. Next breath, as you breathe out, the light comes down further surrounding your throat, giving you the power to speak your mind with truth and gentleness. Next breath, the light surrounds your heart, filling you with love, compassion and optimism. Breathe in, now as you breathe out the light is around your torso. Helping you feel at home and like you belong. Breathe in, this time the light descends down through your feet, rooting and grounding you to Earth. Now, as you continue breathing, imagine the light swirling through you, then growing into a large ball around you. Allow the light to grow brighter. As it grows, your protection grows. Continue breathing slowly as the ball of light gets brighter. You have created an energetic shield around yourself.

Creating A Ward: Choose the area where you will be setting up your ward. This could be your entire home, a room, your alter or even your vehicle. Cleanse the space of negative and old energy. Gather and cleanse your items. Some good items to use as wards are herbs, crystals, symbols or objects such as iron nails, mirrors or a statue. Set your intention. Be very specific, stating your intention for what the ward will do out loud. “This ward protects my home and those within it from all harm.” Create the ward. Start by placing your item(s) where you want them. At thresholds, corners or in a protective circle around the area. Visualize a glowing shield of light forming around your space, impenetrable to negativity. Once you’ve done that, speak your intentions out loud again. Maintenance. Wards need refreshing. Cleanse and recharge your wards periodically, reaffirming your intentions.

Creating an Amulet: Creating an amulet is very similar to creating a ward. The difference is that wards are static, unmoving, designed to protect a designated area. Amulets are designed to go with you to provide protection wherever you may be. Start by choosing the purpose of your amulet - for this we will use personal protection. Select the object that will be your amulet. Common objects are: crystals, coins, a key, small pouch with herbs and/or jewelry. You’ll want it to be something small enough to carry with you or to wear. Cleanse the object. Charge the amulet with your intention. Hold it in your hands and focus on your purpose. Speak your intention out loud “This amulet is charged with protection to shield me wherever I go.” Visualize the energy filling the object, glowing, warming and becoming alive. Seal the amulet. You can use anointing oil, blow over it to lock in the energy or wrap it in cloth or ribbon and staying your final affirmation. Recharge as needed by repeating the charging and sealing process. This can be done periodically (full moon or new moon) or when you no longer feel it’s working.

With these three simple tools, you can set up protection wherever you feel the need. Protection magick should not be fear-based, it should be empowering. Allowing you to go out into the world with confidence, clarity and power over your energy.
